Kayak y snorkel en Mondragó

Marc, lives in Mallorca

I would go before 10. In August the Mondragó car park fills up mid-morning and the path from Cala Figuera is a 40-minute walk in the sun. With children, the left-hand shore: less slope and pine shade until midday. If it is full, s'Amarador is a 10-minute walk away and usually has space.

One of the best coves in the south-east for families. Not the prettiest in the area (that is s'Amarador, next door), but the most comfortable.

July and August weekends between 11 and 17. And days of llevant (east wind): waves come in and the water turns cloudy.

What it is like

Cala Mondragó is a fine-sand cove 75 metres wide and about 60 deep, facing east-south-east and surrounded by pine woods. The seabed is sand for the first 30 metres and then posidonia, which is why the water shows two colours. It has been part of the Mondragó Natural Park since 1992, together with s’Amarador, 10 minutes away on foot along the coastal path.

Who it is for

Families with children: the entry into the water is gentle, the slope minimal and there is a lifeguard from May to October. Snorkelling is good at the right-hand point, where the rocks begin. Dogs are not allowed and wheelchair access reaches the upper platform, not the sand.

Getting there and parking

From Santanyí, take the Ma-6102 towards Cala Figuera and the signposted turn-off to the park (8 km, 12 minutes). Two paid car parks at 6 € a day: Mondragó, with 180 spaces and 5 minutes on foot, and s’Amarador, with 120 spaces. In August the first one fills up by about 10:30. TIB bus 501 stops at the park entrance from May to October; it is 7 minutes from the stop to the sand.

Facilities

Lifeguard and first aid in season, showers, toilets, a kiosk with sandwiches and drinks, sunbeds and parasols for hire. There is no restaurant on the cove itself; the nearest is at the s’Amarador car park.

When to go

The cove is sheltered from north, north-east and west winds, so it is a good choice on tramuntana days. With llevant or xaloc (east and south-east) waves come in and the water turns cloudy. Water temperature: 19 °C in May, 26 °C in July, 25 °C in September and still 22 °C in October.
